Unable to find appropriate rehabilitation measures, the Shepherds brought together Atlanta's medical and donor communities to found the Shepherd Center. The Shepherd Center was founded in 1975, when Harold and Alana Shepherd travelled 1,400 miles (2,300 km) to find the appropriate care for their son James who was paralyzed from the neck down in a body surfing accident.
